Voodoo Brewery Big Black Voodoo Daddy

Voodoo Brewery‘s Big Black Voodoo Daddy, in the words of Van Halen, is what dreams are made of.  While a consistent part of the Voodoo line of beers, this beer often finds itself being aged in all manner of ways, being released in extremely small amounts at special events at the brewpub.  As such, these aged versions of the Big Black Voodoo Daddy are dreamed of, and sought after by craft beer enthusiasts everywhere.  We’ve been vying for any information we can get regarding the upcoming Black Magick release, which is sure to happen soon, but as of yet a date has not been named.  The brewery has been remarkably tight-lipped about this release, but when it does occur, it promises to be special – and you can bet we’ll be there.

Because of the consistently-excellent nature of this staple in Voodoo’s lineup, I had to have at least one while I was home.  We at The Beer Circle haven’t taken an in-depth look at this beer yet, (but we have made pancakes out of it!) so here goes.

The pour is blacker than black, entirely opaque. A one-half finger dark brown head forms, with minimal lacing to the glass afterwards.
Aromawww.dyerware.comwww.dyerware.comwww.dyerware.comwww.dyerware.comwww.dyerware.com
Intense aromas of dark chocolate, fudge, and cocoa dominates the nose here. Smelling it is almost like tasting it; it's remarkable how powerful Big Black Voodoo Daddy's nose is.
Tastewww.dyerware.comwww.dyerware.comwww.dyerware.comwww.dyerware.comwww.dyerware.com
Again, as the aroma would indicate, dark chocolate flavors take center stage here. The sweetness is not overstated, with a slight bitterness to the cocoa flavors. The significant ABV doesn't ever overtly make its presence known, aside from a slight warming sensation on the backend.
Mouthfeel/Drinkabilitywww.dyerware.comwww.dyerware.comwww.dyerware.comwww.dyerware.comwww.dyerware.com
This is a rather full-bodied brew, you can definitely feel it as it plays on the tongue - wonderfully weighted, but not too thick. This is the perfect mouthfeel for this type of beer.
Valuewww.dyerware.comwww.dyerware.comwww.dyerware.comwww.dyerware.comwww.dyerware.com
At $5.25 for a roughly 12oz pour at the brewpub, this is definitely a fair price for an excellent imperial stout. Also, you won't be needing too many of these.
Overallwww.dyerware.comwww.dyerware.comwww.dyerware.comwww.dyerware.comwww.dyerware.com
This beer proves to be a consistently excellent, straight-up American Imperial Stout. I can't help but compare it to the excellent Black Magick that I eagerly anticipate trying again, but for now, I'll continue to enjoy this for what it is. Highly recommended.

Garrett brings a somewhat different perspective on beer to the table. While always thrilled to try any new, exotic brew that finds itself his way, Garrett finds that he's often quite satisfied with reliable, common craft choices. As such, Garrett is a fan of trying and reviewing these (admittedly less expensive) beers, and using them to introduce the exciting, flavorful world of craft beer to those not-yet-acquainted. Garrett’s favorite styles are IPAs and bourbon stouts, but won’t turn his nose up at anything. Find Garrett Miller on Google Plus
