Church Brew Works’ Heini’s Hooch

Church Brew Works’ Heini’s Hooch

At this year’s Great American Beer Fest featured one of Pittsburgh’s most unique (in terms of architecture, at least) breweries, Church Brew Works. While the Church has been a Pittsburgh staple for years, it only recently began its atmospheric rise to prominence and showed that talent this year, winning four medals and Large Brewpub and Large Brewpub Brewer of the Year honors this year in Colorado. Included in these accolades were bronze medals for Celestial … Read entire article »

Fat Head’s Head Hunter IPA

Fat Head’s Head Hunter IPA

My past couple reviews strayed away from my home market, and while I love the beers I had the chance to drink, I think it’s time to cover a local establishment who just started bottling their flagship beer. Fat Head’s Saloon started as a humble bar in Pittsburgh’s South Side, which blossomed as the area improved and became a hot bed for nightlife. Fast forward to the current, and Fat Head’s stands as one of … Read entire article »

Draai Laag Brewing Company Simon Girty

Draai Laag Brewing Company Simon Girty

While visiting a recently opened bar near me, I was recommended a beer by the owner. The bottle in question was by a local Pittsburgh brewery – Draai Laag Brewing Company – that was completely unknown to me (much to my chagrin), and even looking at the bottle, I would’ve pegged it as a beer out of Belgium due to the… unique label. Billed as an artisanal brewery, Draai Laag experiments with different flavors and … Read entire article »

American Craft Beer Week (Or: How Garrett and Russ Accidentally Got on TV)

Just over one year ago, May 20, 2011, Russ, Garrett, and a number of friends celebrated their recent graduation from The Pennsylvania State University by taking a trip to western Pennsylvania, hitting up a number of breweries along the way.  Among the stops was Penn Brewery, located in Pittsburgh; it also happened to be our first stop after arriving in town. We arrived shortly before noon and immediately took to looking about the place.  With an inviting outdoor patio, and friendly, attentive waitstaff (being the only ones there at that hour probably helped), we were already having a great experience. We ordered a few choice drafts that we’d had previously at a Z-Bar “Meet The Brewer” Event, where we also had the privilege of meeting Sales Manager Eric Heinauer, who we … Read entire article »

Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week 2012 Wrap-up

Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week 2012 Wrap-up

I was fortunate enough to have a wedding and a work meeting in Pittsburgh during the inaugural Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week. Put together in less than six months, this event really was impressive for an initial attempt by a city. There were over 360 events planned at the city’s various bars, including some that were not craft-specific. It was great to see the city embrace the beer culture and expand upon its growing craft beer … Read entire article »
