Cellar: Avery Brewing Company Rumpkin

Cellar: Avery Brewing Company Rumpkin

Craft beer these days pushes the limits of styles, taking them to places breweries never dreamed of in the past. Avery has done just that. Think about the last time you were drinking a pumpkin ale, did it cross your mind that it would taste better with triple (or quadruple) the ABV and aged in rum barrels? Well, it should have. Enter: Rumpkin. An 18% ABV pumpkin ale aged in Gosling’s rum barrels. I wanted to let that … Read entire article »

Cellar: Victory Golden Monkey 2011

Cellar: Victory Golden Monkey 2011

Victory Golden Monkey has been a go-to beer for me ever since I turned 21 in good old Central PA. I liked the taste, and the nearly 10% ABV had the desired effects on a college student. Now that I can appreciate the beer a bit more, I decided to put a 750ml bottle in my cellar to see how it holds up. The results were pretty surprising. Cellar: Weyerbacher Riserva

Cellar: Weyerbacher Riserva

This week I sat down for three straights days of three vintages of Weyerbacher Brewing Company’s American Wild Ale: Riserva. Weyerbacher thought highly of the most recent batch, saying before the release: Riserva is an 11.7% abv amber ale, fermented with wild yeast and red raspberries. In choosing the barrels to blend specifically for this year’s batch, we were able to achieve an absolutely beautiful taste profile that’s the epitome of the sour beer experience. We … Read entire article »

Cellar: Founders Imperial Stout

Cellar: Founders Imperial Stout

Today I’m continuing my trend of pulling some Founders stuff out of the cellar. Thursday I looked at Founders’ KBS after one year in the basement, and next up is their Imperial Stout. I have always been a big fan of this beer (which is basically the case for all stouts made by Founders). This and Founders Breakfast Stout really helped me make the jump into the wide world of stouts, and surely either don’t hurt … Read entire article »

Cellar: Founders KBS (Kentucky Breakfast Stout)

Cellar: Founders KBS (Kentucky Breakfast Stout)

Founders Brewing Company is a popular brewery on this blog (earlier this week Greg delved into Curmudgeon’s Better Half). Tonight I’m taking a look at the two most recent releases of their famed KBS (Kentucky Breakfast Stout), a bourbon barrel aged imperial stout. Please note that this is NOT simply Founders Breakfast Stout aged in bourbon barrels, it is actually a completely different base beer–the same used to create CBS. KBS is aged in a … Read entire article »
