DC Beer Week: New Belgium Sour Blending Workshop

DC Beer Week: New Belgium Sour Blending Workshop

DC Beer Week is one of my favorite times of the year, I click through dcbeer.com‘s day-by-day chart of events like a child opening presents on Christmas day. This year, the event that piqued my interest more than any other was a sour blending workshop with New Belgium’s sensory specialist Lauren Salazar at Black Squirrel. It cost $55 and was one of only five venues for this rare event. I had a great time when … Read entire article »

Splinter Gold Batch #2 – Tröegs Brewing Company

Splinter Gold Batch #2 – Tröegs Brewing Company

Late last Friday night, I received a text message from Russ: “Did you get Splinter Gold? [It was] released at Tröegs today.” In disbelief, I thought Russ was pulling a fast one at first. Surely Tröegs would give more notice when releasing such a widely anticipated beer. After all, this was the first time the brewery would be releasing a Splinter series since its move to Hershey. It wasn’t until I saw this tweet that … Read entire article »

Upland Sour Reserve

Upland Sour Reserve

Upland Brewing Company is known for producing top notch American Wild Ales,* so it came as no surprise when batch 1 of their Sour Reserve sold out in mere minutes on Upland’s website. Much to my dismay, I was not fast enough to get a bottle. Luckily, Upland opened up batch 2 to a lottery system and this time my luck turned for the better! I tasked a friend of mine who was studying at … Read entire article »

1,000th Untappd Unique Checkin: Sierra Nevada / Boulevard Terra Incognita – SAVOR Beer

1,000th Untappd Unique Checkin: Sierra Nevada / Boulevard Terra Incognita – SAVOR Beer

SAVOR Beer Week was a great one in DC (and for this blog) and guest poster Chase had a great time at the event itself. One piece of swag ticket holders receive at SAVOR is a special collaboration beer for consumption at home. Chase was kind enough to share it with me, and I decided it was a beer that lived up the prestige of my 1,000th checkin on Untappd. in case you don’t know, Untappd … Read entire article »

New Belgium Lips Of Faith – Tart Lychee

New Belgium Lips Of Faith – Tart Lychee

New Belgium‘s Lips of Faith series has produced a number of great beers–including Biere de Mars, which Paige gave a 4/5–and today I have the privilege of reviewing one I’ve been looking forward to for quite some time: Tart Lychee. I’ve enjoyed a fair share of lychee in my day and love sour beers, especially New Belgium’s La Folie, so this has my name written all over it. Tart Lychee Beer Stats Style: American Wild Ale Serving: Bottle Size: 22oz ABV: 7.50% BA Score: 88 RB … Read entire article »

Cellar: Weyerbacher Riserva

Cellar: Weyerbacher Riserva

This week I sat down for three straights days of three vintages of Weyerbacher Brewing Company’s American Wild Ale: Riserva. Weyerbacher thought highly of the most recent batch, saying before the release: Riserva is an 11.7% abv amber ale, fermented with wild yeast and red raspberries. In choosing the barrels to blend specifically for this year’s batch, we were able to achieve an absolutely beautiful taste profile that’s the epitome of the sour beer experience. We … Read entire article »

The Bruery Filmishmish

The Bruery Filmishmish

If you’ve been following this site (as we know you all have been! Thanks!) you’ve probably realized that we enjoy apricots…a lot. I gave Cantillon Fou’ Foune a 5 overall and Garrett laid himself down at the feet of Dogfish Head’s Aprihop (4.5 Overall). We aren’t ashamed, and I’m not going to stop. Today, it’s The Bruery’s Filmishmish; tomorrow, apricots will be growing in my stomach. As you will also recall, Bob and I recently received … Read entire article »

SAVOR: Firestone Walker Beer Dinner at Churchkey

SAVOR: Firestone Walker Beer Dinner at Churchkey

I was very excited when I saw that Churchkey was kicking off SAVOR Beer Week with a dinner featuring beers from Firestone Walker Brewing Company. We’ve already taken a stab at a few of their beers on this site (Paige with Union Jack and Greg with 14th and 15th Anniversary) and I personally haven’t found a beer brewed by them that I didn’t like. All I knew going into the event was what beers would … Read entire article »

Ithaca LeBleu Release

Ithaca LeBleu Release

When I finally received word that Ithaca would be releasing LeBleu, the sought-after blueberry American Wild Ale, I began making plans right away. Typically, this beer is released on New Years’ Eve. I hadn’t made the trip before, but I was planning to go this previous New Year’s Eve when Ithaca postponed its release, saying that they wild ale simply was not yet ready. Based on the fact that the brewery stated that there would … Read entire article »

Event: Surly Brewing Company at Churchkey

Event: Surly Brewing Company at Churchkey

Last weekend at Churchkey, Washington DC’s famous beer bar, Surly Brewing Company out of Brooklyn Center, Minnesota was on display with 10 offerings available. Surly’s Founder Omar Ansari even flew in to mingle with patrons, talking about anything from why Surly doesn’t can Darkness to future plans for the brewery. I got out of work a little early and grabbed a seat by the windows to hunker down and get my share of Surly goodness. I … Read entire article »
