Russ Beck

Russ can trace his beginnings in craft beer to sitting in Zeno’s Pub in State College drinking various craft beer options from across Pennsylvania. Since then, he has never faltered in finding new brews, whether they’re rare, delicious, or hopefully both. Russ will be writing on a large variety of subjects, including but not limited to: reviews, homebrewing, and how to take labels off of beer bottles. He’ll drink just about anything, but prefers a nice Stout, IPA, or Weizenbock. Find Russ Beck on Google Plus

Troegs Scratch 98 Triple Mango IPA

Troegs Scratch 98 Triple Mango IPA

Last spring, Brad Moyer ran a guest post about his story winning Al’s of Hampden’s Triple IPA homebrew competition. As his prize, the beer would be brewed as part of Troegs’ scratch series. The winning brew was called Triple Mango IPA and it quickly became one of their best beers in the Scratch series, at least according to this blog. It was so popular, it won a competition to determine which Scratch beer Troegs’ should re-brew. … Read entire article »

Hollywood Taking Notice of Craft Beer with “Drinking Buddies”

Hollywood Taking Notice of Craft Beer with “Drinking Buddies”

I can’t decide whether I’m more excited for a movie set at a Chicago-based craft brewery–Revolution Brewery–or for a movie where I get to look at Olivia Wilde and Anna Kendrick duke it out (romantic comedy aside). Either way, craft beer fans are sure to pop open a nice bottle and settle in with their significant others for this 90 minute showing, which originally was released at SXSW this year. I have to say that … Read entire article »

Selin’s Grove Phoenix Kriek

Selin’s Grove Phoenix Kriek

The last time I visited Selin’s Grove Brewing Company I was disappointed to find that the Framboise had kicked before I got in. Luckily, while trying out Troegs’ Splinter Gold in Harrisburg, I read on Selin’s Grove Facebook page that something “tart and in my goblet” was recently tapped. After an opportune phone call, I learned that the oft sought after Phoenix Kriek was fresh and ready to go. I jumped at the chance to … Read entire article »

Better From The Barrel: Extreme De Struise Edition

Better From The Barrel: Extreme De Struise Edition

We have a real treat for this edition of “Better from the Barrel.” De Struise, a well respected Belgian brewery, does some crazy things with their stouts. Stemming from the base of Black Albert, a 13% ABV Russian Imperial Stout, De Struise offers Cuvee Delphine and Black Damnation V: Double Black. Cuvee Delphine is step two in this process and is Black Albert aged in Four Roses bourbon barrels for a few months. Double Black … Read entire article »

Recap: Barrel Room Collection Release at Voodoo Brewery

Recap: Barrel Room Collection Release at Voodoo Brewery

Last weekend, Greg, Russ and Kenton made the trip to beautiful northwestern PA to see the brand new Voodoo Brewpub and hopefully buy some delicious barrel aged beers. This weekend was no normal weekend, it was the long awaited Barrel Room Collection release. For our faithful readers, you’ll remember our attempt to liveblog the event, but we figured it warranted a full writeup as well. A lot of people speculated as to when everyone would start to line … Read entire article »

Voodoo Brewery Barrel Room Collection Release This Weekend!

Ladies and Gentlemen this is not a drill. I repeat, Voodoo Brewery is set to release their Barrel Room Collection this weekend. Wait, you may ask, isn’t there basketball to watch?! Why yes, I would reply, and what better to go with buzzer beaters and Cinderella than Big Black Voodoo Daddy and a little Black Magick? Imagine the beer pictured to the right, but aged in various bourbon barrels. Don’t worry, we had to sit down … Read entire article »

Mad Fox Leaded Coffee Stout

Mad Fox Leaded Coffee Stout

Before heading to the Mad Fox tour, I picked up a brand new coffee stout, called Leaded, on Mad Fox’s half off growler day. On every magical Tuesday, they take 50% off a growler fill from 3pm until 9pm, so you really have no excuse to not stop by. For this creation, Mad Fox teamed up with Beanetics of Annandale, Virginia to get a heavy does of cold pressed coffee (31 gallons of it I … Read entire article »

Mad Fox Brewing Company – Falls Church, VA

Mad Fox Brewing Company – Falls Church, VA

Mad Fox Brewing Company of Falls Church, Virginia is a common meeting spot for various The Beer Circle writers, but I noticed we hadn’t given it a full review to this point. Luckily, Mad Fox has started offering tours on the first Saturday of each month, which I finally had time to take advantage of this weekend. As always, parking for this brewery is great in an area where parking is miserable. You just can’t find … Read entire article »
